How to choose a Metal Stamping Vendor

Determine vendor's capability for your specific needs by discussing similar projects in the vendor's history or the success of new ventures.

Estimate your annual order quantity as accurate as possible, as this drives some of the tooling decisions and thus cost.

If you have special requirements for example coins on certain edges, make sure they are properly indicated on your drawing and discuss those with the vendor. Ensure key dimensions are identified on the print.

Consider prototypes prior to production release to ensure part fit and function thus reducing the possibility for costly tooling changes. Fit checks are easily achieved and can even be executed using 3D printing. Functional validation requires parts made through the same process and material.

Ask for quality certification for example ISO 9001 as well as on time delivery and quality performance data.

Review the drawing with the vendor, ask about cost drivers on the drawing and potential alternatives for example a unusual tight tolerance on a hole diameter.

Consider your packaging and delivery format for example reel-to-reel delivery to enhance on site automation at your facility.

If you require processes outside of stamping for example plating post stamping ensure the vendor has long standing relations with their vendors and will be processing in the US in order to comply with environmental standards.
